PHARR — The city of Pharr held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new Wellness and Innovation Complex on Thursday. City and state officials gathered at the complex’s future location on 1121 E. Nolana Loop to break ground and celebrate the project that they hope will encourage healthier lifestyles among Pharr residents. “This project— we’re really excited about it,” Commissioner Roberto “Bobby” Carrillo said. “Most of all it’s a wellness innovation center which will promote a lot of health and wellness.” The complex will feature a 120-foot mirrored waterway, a jogging trail, a building with a 150-seat lecture hall and an amphitheater with landscape seating. There will also be a park, which Laren Warren of the Warren Group Architects Inc. described as being French inspired. “They’re going to be able to come and there will be all types of classes— obviously wellness classes,” Carrillo said. “It’s going to be an active wellness innovation center where people can sit, walk or exercise.” Carrillo said the complex will be a first not only in Hidalgo County, but for the entire Rio Grande Valley once it’s completed. www.themonitor.com/2020/11/19/pharr-breaks-ground-new-state-art-wellness-facility/

riograndeguardian.com/hernandez-the-pharr-solution-will-bridge-the-digital-divide-once-and-for-all/We will have broadband in every home, every business, every institution within the borders of the city of Pharr’s geographical boundaries. You will have fiber optic cable available to your institution and/or building, home or apartment. It will be no less than one gigabyte speed. That is 100 times better than you will see in the market today. That is only because the city commission has put the proper infrastructure in play. We are delighted that there are so many independent providers with the service, whether it be AT&T, Verizon, Spectrum. We are delighted with the service they provide. But they are unwilling to participate and put in the proper infrastructure that we all deserve. But we will do it in the city of Pharr. The project’s name is TeamPharr.Net. We will install 2.1 million feet, or 380 miles of fiber optic cable to 24,000 residential and business accounts, and counting. The network will provide internet speed of one gigabyte, as stated. It will be fast, reliable, accessible, and affordable to Pharr families and citizens. This project has been undergoing a preliminary network study during the last few weeks and we expect to start building no later than a few months. The phases will be built in as stated in the video, starting from south Pharr going north, the most needed will be addressed first. Eventually the entire city will be lifted up and ready for full use by June of 2022.

In my previous position within the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas we were engaged with the City of Pharr in developing the plan that led to today’s exciting announcement. And in my current role I look forward to MHM, Methodist Healthcare Ministries, as a philanthropic and healthcare organization supporting this initiative in all its aspects. Mayor Hernandez knows that we need this infrastructure in order to go forward. And he also knows that the infrastructure is a means to an end. What he is really investing in is the incredible human capital of all the young people. We have had too many years – and I come from the border region – of what they call the brain drain, right, with young people leaving and starting their innovative ideas, like the young woman from Las Milpas starting her business in Silicon Valley when she could have started here if we had had the infrastructure to attract industry. So, with today’s announcement the City of Pharr is taking a leadership role in the effort to show its community that it understands the importance of closing the digital divide and increasing broadband access for all. I look forward to developing our partnership to bring telehealth and so much more to this community and to the entire region. riograndeguardian.com/barton-pharr-is-now-the-anchor-for-a-regional-powerhouse/

Perez: Huge increase in warehouse space being developed in south Pharr Before participants on the tour boarded their bus, Perez ran through some of the new attractions coming to Pharr. “There’s going to be nice sit-down restaurant that will compliment Top Golf. It will be a first-to-market restaurant. They are not in the Valley,” Perez said. Indeed, Perez said Pharr is known for bringing first-to-market establishments to the Valley. By way of example he cited CarMax, Top Golf, Main Event, and Pappadeaux. Perez said Pharr EDC is hopeful of bringing another Starbucks to the city. The next one, though, will be on the north side of town. The EDC leader also highlighted the residential developments occurring on the north side of town. He said one developer has a project at Sugar Road and Minnesota that has added 180 rooftops. “The second phase will be 165, and the third phase, 135. By the time we get done it will close to 400 rooftops.” riograndeguardian.com/perez-huge-increase-in-warehouse-space-being-developed-in-south-pharr/
