More than 170 jobs on the horizon as ScanTech breaks ground in McAllen
April 17, 2017
McAllen Mayor Jim Darling, McAllen EDC President Keith Patridge and ScanTech Sciences COO Chip Starns officially broke ground April 13 on ScanTech Sciences, Inc.’s first Electronic Cold-Pasteurization TM (ECPTM) food treatment center at at 6800 International Parkway. The new facility is expected to bring more than 175 jobs to the area.
At the new facility, ScanTech Sciences will use its patented Electronic Cold-Pasteurization technology to improve produce quality and safety, helping the entire food chain deliver fresher, higher quality fruits and vegetables. ScanTech Sciences serves customers throughout the supply chain – from growers and packers to distributors and retailers.
Over the coming months, ScanTech Sciences will transform the existing warehouse into a cross-dock facility with a state-of-the art produce handling system and build out an adjoining structure to house the ECP treatment system.
The 100,000-square-foot center, with options to expand, is scheduled to be open in the fourth quarter of 2017 and fully operational by the first quarter of 2018.

Excitement about SpaceX possibly building rockets in RGVMCALLEN, RGV – The prospect of SpaceX building rockets in the Rio Grande Valley for its launch site at Boca Chica beach was discussed at a recent State of the RGV Real Estate and Construction Market forum. The four speakers at the event were Ramiro Garza, principal at Noble Development, Mike Blum, partner in NAI Global, Oscar Garcia, principal at Jacobs Engineering Group, and Raudel Garza, CEO of Harlingen Economic Development Corporation. All four agreed that in order to attract new businesses, the Valley needs to have good schools, access to healthcare and better infrastructure. The event was hosted by the newly-formed Rio Grande Valley Society for Marketing Professional Services and held at the offices of the McAllen Chamber of Commerce. Discussion about SpaceX and the commercial space industry began when Garcia said his company, Jacobs, works in the industry, not only with NASA but also companies like SpaceX, Virgin Galactic, and United Launch Alliance (ULA). Garcia said, “dynamic changes” are on the way. “If you look at the commercial space side you are seeing both NASA and the DoD (Department of Defense) move away from handling a lot of that industry. They are throwing that over the fence, so, thus comes in the ULAs and the SpaceXs of the world, to be able to take up that,” Garcia said. riograndeguardian.com/real-estate-developers-excited-about-spacex-building-rockets-in-rgv/

Why would they build in McAllen when something like 70% of the country's produce comes through Pharr's bridge?
