Supposedly most of the interior has been gutted out. UTRGV will have to rebuild almost everything new, hence the almost $50 million dollar price tag to renovate.

Why not just build a new one on campus or on say the old HEB site? For the not so impressive outside fascade?

It's happening!! Going Forward: UT regents OK Majestic Theater purchase in Brownsville The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley got the green light Thursday from the UT Board of Regents to purchase the iconic Majestic Theater and adjacent buildings for a new performing arts center downtown. The purchase price is still under negotiation, but UTRGV President Guy Bailey said the estimated $47.13 million cost of renovations will be far more than what it costs to buy the buildings at 10th and East Elizabeth streets, which are owned by the Roy F. and Joann Cole Mitte Foundation. Quick video of a portion of the interior of the Majestic: http://instagram.com/p/CxJWDlAMBdq It doesn’t look like it’s being restored. Just rebuilt to new. It’s still nice though.

There’s nothing left of the theater, only the stairs/mezzanine that used to lead to the theater. No wonder it’s going to cost almost $50 million dollars, they’re going to have to build a whole new theatre. I believe they will knock down the wall separating the JCP store from the majestic and make that the actual new theater/stage.

Well hopefully UTRGV doesn’t F this up. President Bailey recently commented that construction would start immediately. Brownsville will be the only city in the RGV with a PAC in the middle of their historic downtown district.
