I saw that on Saturday too. I don't like that it looks like they're doing away with the Sugar Road overpass and exit ramps. That means, if you're coming from McAllen to go to say Pappadeaux or Furniture Row (or yes, Stilletto's), you'll need to get off probably right after Jackson Road, head east towards 281/Cage and do the turn-round back west towards those places. That's a long wasted drive. It's also a long wasted drive for those wanting to go north from south Sugar Road or south from North Sugar Road. Not to mention all the school traffic that crosses daily. Also, this is going to contribute very badly to the traffic that is already backed up headed east to Jackson/I-2 to go either south (Costco/Lowes/restaurants) or north (Pharr Town Center/Ashley Furniture/theater). And that's before Top Golf opens up! That area is going to be awful with traffic. **I'm afraid the double lanes aren't going to be enough for the traffic that goes through the interchange. By the time it's completed, we'll need three lanes.

From Pharr Mayor on FB:
I am proud to announce that after years of advocating, meetings, Texas Transportation Commission hearings, and visiting with our state leaders and legislators, the $303 million Pharr Interchange Project is set to begin construction this August with an expected completion date of late 2022. On Thursday, the Texas Transportation Commission met to select the project designer, the last step before construction and awarded the contract to Dragados-Pulice. Since my election as Mayor of Pharr in 2015, the Pharr Interchange Project has been one of my key priorities and I could not be more thankful, excited, and grateful as this project, considered one of the largest investments in our region, prepares to begin construction. The Pharr Interchange has long overgrown its capacity due to our massive growth in population and vehicular traffic. We are grateful that our state leaders in Austin have worked with us to make this project a priority. As a vital lifeline for our region, the Pharr Interchange is crucial for commerce, trade, commuter, and international traffic, and also serves as an evacuation route for our area. Thank you to all our partners for making this much-needed investment in our region and in our city, which will improve our transportation capacity! #PharrPride #Transportation #PharrInterchange

I never, ever, ever see anyone working on McAllen's portion - it feels like 3 years have gone by already!

Is this project still going on? It says project to start this August and last time I was in the valley I didn't see anything there, it was in Christmas... Is weird because is a public project and should have funds and everything in place.

Is this project still going on? It says project to start this August and last time I was in the valley I didn't see anything there, it was in Christmas... Is weird because is a public project and should have funds and everything in place. Yes they’ve secured approximately $350m in funding for it. They’re supposed to starr after they finish mcallen construction. Although there has been some groundwork I’m the old holiday village park.

HERE WE GO... and when it's complete, it will need to be expanded again. lol Construction on $303M Pharr interchange expansion to begin this monthDespite the COVID-19 pandemic and Hurricane Hanna wreaking havoc across the Rio Grande Valley, the Pharr interchange expansion project is still on schedule to begin this month. Octavio Saenz, public information officer for the Texas Department of Transportation, said TxDOT is exhausting the project’s preliminary stages before shovel-ready work begins. "We’re essentially just looking for and identifying utilities prior to any groundbreaking,” Saenz said. Construction on the $303 million project is expected in mid to late August.
Dragados-Pulice Joint Venture was appointed by TxDOT to undertake the design work, as well as construction and maintenance. The project will improve 7.8 miles of roadway in the cities of McAllen, Pharr and San Juan, including I-2 from just west of Second Street to east of FM 2557, and I-69C from Nolana Loop to I-2, including the interchange. The improvements include the full reconstruction of the I-2/I-69C Interchange to include two-lane direct connectors in all four directions, reconstruction and widening of the 1-2 general purpose lanes from six to eight lanes, or four lanes in each direction, as well as reconfigurations of the main lane ramps on I-2 from Second Street to FM 2557 (Stewart Road). The project will also improve the approaches and departures to and from the direct connectors. “Basically what we’re doing right now is closing frontage roads to do this utility work,” Saenz said. With the pandemic and more recently inclement weather in Hidalgo County, Saenz explained that it has not hindered the process of pre-work for the project. “Fortunately, (Hurricane Hanna) did not,” Saenz said. “It was already planned to be a groundbreaking in August. That’s still going forward. Right now the ground is kind of saturated, so that might push us back a few days.” The project is scheduled to be completed in late 2022. Finally, I think this is good news for the area to keep growing without traffic bottlenecks in that interchange.
