On the agenda for tonight's city commission meeting:
The city of Brownsville is expected to call for a May 4th election to eliminate The Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation and Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation and replace the two boards with a "Greater Brownsville Municipal Development District."

Basically a merger

No need to hve 2 branches of economic development for the city... they hve served their purpose by bringing development to BRO...now its time to focus on growing it and keeping it here.

Basically a merger Yep. Hopefully this works out better. Apparently there has been a "mishandling" of money at both.

The monies were split from the original Brownsville economic development (BEDC) to create two different targeted developments... pretty much what Spammy was complaining about of our RGV EDCs. .but BRO did it differently n now i believe our city is making just one MUNICIPAL DISTRICT to combine the monies and not duplicate spending for certain projects or programs...its working for us...

Zackly... thats why i can't help myself every time i see an article saying Hidalgo taskforce and prosperity blah, blah, blah working on human capitol,infrastructure.. BRO has done that already. Brownsville created two different developments from one monies...one was to target development and the other for infrastructure.. at the same time.... that's why there was so much dispute in our city commission. At the end i think it just worked out fine!! Now that much development was brought into our city and much of our infrastructure in hike n bike trails, parks, roads.. BECAUSE ppl here wanted quality of life.. Time to consolidate .. they hve both served their purpose already.. GREAT JOB BRO!! I knew BRO was already ahead of the game...👍

Olive Garden received no tax abatements/incentives to open a location in Brownsville. According to the development group that built Las Palmas, Olive Garden had been wanting to build a location in Brownsville for a long, long, time but there were no suitable locations for them until Las Palmas was built (adjacent to other restaurants) Brownsville currently has no prime parcels or real estate off the Interstate and close to other (new) commercial developments to build on - a Madeira , Oklahoma Station, or Uptown Brownsville/Morrison Crossing 2 will need to be built before they show up. After the recent wave of restaurants was announced, outgoing Mayor Mendez said many, many more restaurants are coming, and that can only mean a large commercial development is planned, most likely around the Pablo Kisel/Morrison road are where all the hotels are being built.
Until a newer large mixed-use commercial development gets built, Brownsville will never get a PF Changs, Texas de Brazil, Walk-on's, Cracker Barrel, Five Guys, Twin Peaks, Sprouts, Costco, Dave & Busters or any of the other restaurant, retail, or entertainment establishments y'all have. If I was any of those restaurants I'd wait too - why build a freestanding location out in the middle of nowhere when I can wait to be part of a large mixed-use development that could possibly include a Costco, Homegoods, at home, AMC Theatre, etc.
